Most (but not all) higher octane fuel has a small percentage of ethanol as an octane booster. As a chemist, I can tell you that ethanol is higher octane than gasoline, but it has lower thermal (chemical) energy and lowers fuel economy. Gasoline is a complex blend of hydrocarbons so it is not easy to simply calculate the octane increase by adding a gallon of E85 to a tank of premium of unknown composition.
