Hi all
I picked up my new GT Sport yesterday, drove it for a couple of hours (hilarious fun!) and parked it in my garage overnight. Went down to it this morning and it had no power at all. Checked the lights hadn't been left on, and gave the battery a charge (it was flat as a pancake). I've since managed to turn the engine over, so there's nothing wrong with fuses, etc.

The only thing I can think of that would cause this is me leaving the smart key in a cupboard next to the car. I've read elsewhere that this can cause the battery to die, but I wouldn't have thought it would happen as quickly as it did.

Anyone got any similar horror stories, or should I be looking elsewhere for the culprit?

Hey Kiwi!

The key fob will NOT cause the car battery to die.

Did you, by any chance, play with any buttons before you exited from the vehicle upon arrival at the house?

Also, the car will not leave the headlights on. Even if you leave them in the ON position on the stick, the ECU will turn them off after 30 seconds. All Kia vehicles have been programmed this way for about 15 years.

Yes, I was playing with all the buttons, learning what they do :)

Which buttons in particular would cause the battery to drain completely flat though? Just so I don't touch them again :D

Okay, so as a MASTER detective, I have deduced the following scenario and walkthrough of the turn of events.

First, you thoroughly enjoyed your wonderful Drive in your amazing Stringer. Then, you arrived home for the evening and pulled into your garage. At that point you began 2 pour your fingertips over all of the goodies on the dash. The steering wheel, the stereo, climate control, trip computer, sunroof, seats..... Sooooo many toys!

Little tune. Little tweak. Little up and down and back. At some point he retired from the car. Maybe you were done Towing or possibly something called your attention away from the vehicle and inside the house.

No, in any typical scenario, this would be perfectly satisfactory. But, what was overlooked in your Frolic session with your new machine was one small detail.

Shortly after you pulled into the garage after arriving home, you turned off the car with the push start button so that you didn't S6 E8 in the garage. In order to continue playing with your features and controls, you hit the start button again to turn the power back on without starting your engine. At that point you continued 2 educate yourself on all of the new gadgets. Finally, you exited the vehicle without remembering to push the power button one last time to turn off the power to all of your accessories.

I imagine that your battery was toast approximately 60 minutes later.

You got me bang to rights there [biggrin]

OK, so if I am fiddling with the accessories (mea culpa!) without the engine running, I need to explicitly turn off the power using the button to close everything down? That seems like a dumb 'feature', especially in a car whose makers have, as you say, prevented lights draining batteries for the past 15 years...oh well, I will live and learn, but shouldn't the car be smart enough to know I have exited the car, especially as I took the smart key with me?

Anyway, the car is huge amounts of fun, at least when it has power [:)]

An update - I have managed to successfully not drain the battery overnight, and everything's working as expected this morning. Thanks for your advice MurlinatoR !
